8 Effective Leadership Qualities You Need To Succeed

“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” - John C Maxwell

What is effective leadership?

Leaders are the "face" of the organization who directly influence the effectiveness and overall success of a business. Effective Leaders are a blend of congenital traits and learned skills, they can see the future, create positive cultural ... and proactive in the fight to change the world. A good boss is also reason to subordinate employees to stick with the job and dedicate for general development of the organization.

Effective leadership is not an easy journey, it requires extra effort, training and always learning every day. If you choose to become a leader who has the ability to influence others, this article will help you do that. I give you the 8 effective leadership qualities of great leaders that you can learn and practice:

1. Passion

It creates motivation that helps the leaders dedicate and contribute more. You need to have the desire to achieve a certain goal, bringing benefits for yourself as well as your company. From there you will have ideas, bold decisions and creative than ever. A good leader is always passionate about what they do. They believe in what they are trying and dedicating in work with a cheerful attitude. This will inspire their team.

Passion is always motivating everyone to achieve their goals as well as making them work hard all day.

2. Huge Ambition & Visionary

Effective leaders have a very big ambition that beyond themselves. Their ambitions are easy to understand, has the ability to inspire and to entice people to join. In the past in 1975, Steve Jobs had the ambition that one-day Computers (very bulky at the time) will be present in the hands of every user. More recently, Donald Trump participated in the US presidential election with ambitions (and also the slogan) "Make America Great Again". In Vietnam, we see Dang Le Nguyen Vu (chairman of Trung Nguyen Coffee) with the ambition “Bring Vietnam coffee to the world”.

Not only has the ambition, but effective leadership also needs to have a clear vision about how to achieve the ambitions. As a leader, you need to have a visionary and a good leading ability to take your team to reach the final goal. This requires professional skills as well as an incisive thinking brain. Effective leaders also have the ability to communicate the vision extremely well, they like a captain, decide the fate of a group, if there is no vision, they can make "aircraft" deflected and disappeared in a faraway place.

3. Strategic Planning

Effective leadership is also turning the vision into actual business strategy. Managers who are highly competent in this field typically articulate long-term goals and strategies, develop plans which can balance the long-term goals with immediate needs, always update to reflect the changing circumstances and develop plans that contain changes in the future.

4. Manage The Change

The great leaders always understand the inevitable change and resistance is futile. Instead, they predict the changes that are coming and plan to proactively resolve. They promote positive organizational culture and environment encourage professional investigation. This can be difficult for some groups want to "fight" the change. Therefore, effective leaders need great skills. You need to have the ability to support, guide and influence, to challenge and inspire the people in the group. They need strong communication skills to drive the organization to overcome change, even resisting the change.

5. Employee Development (People-Focused)

Effective leadership is also expressed through the training staff to improve performance, provide employees with guidance, encourage employees to develop career and ensure employees understand their roles. A good leader understands that people are the assets of the organization, and the organization’s success or failure depends on all humans. Therefore, they are very careful in recruiting people into their organization, put each person into appropriate positions and seeks harmony of individual goals with the overall goals of the organization.

In addition, effective leaders always have talented employees around them. They also understand that if they are the best in the organization who always give answers to all questions, their organizations are experiencing problems. Not only that, the effective leader sees enormous potential in others, they can see the oak trees in the beech nuts. That’s the reason why they always trust others, seek to encourage and motivate other people so that they can exert most of their ability. The leaders who have good skills in directing and motivating people know how to interact with employees in a way that encourages them. They delegate to employees effectively, expand employment opportunities, act with fairness toward direct reports, and hire talented people for their teams.

6. Inspiration Ability

The managers who recognize and reward employee achievements can inspire the commitment from their subordinates. These managers openly praise others for their performance, understand what motivates others to perform at their best and provide worthwhile rewards for significant organization achievements.

One of the effective leadership’s important task is drawing up a nice panorama of the future to inspire employees to work harder effort. A good leader needs to show their employees that how they can contribute to the future development of the organization and how they can develop their career. The essence here is the true leader must be sincere and do not say anything impossible to abuse, manipulation of employees. The main purpose is for employees to see a good prospect that they can participate and contribute.

7. Self - Awareness

This skill involves recognizing the limits of knowledge and strength. Self-awareness leaders admit their personal mistakes, learning from mistakes, looking for constant feedback and know themselves well.

Self-awareness will give you a strong basic platform and the ability to lead others with purpose, confidence, sincerity, and openness. These skills explain the success as well as the failure of us, that tells us “who we are and what we need from our teammates” to create a united team.

Self-awareness also helps leaders identify the missing in their management skills, realize what they did well and what they need to improve in the job. Knowing these things can help leaders make decisions wisely while increasing the efficient performance of employees.

8. Move from "I" to "We"

Effective leaders very rarely say "I", they use the word "We" more often. They often put the benefits of the organization above their own. They apply the definition of "The mirror and the window" - a metaphor in the book “Good to great” by Jim Collins: When their team is successful, they look out the window first, and acknowledge the contributions of all people; but when their team fails, they look in the mirror first to blame themselves and take responsibility for themselves. The inefficient leaders do the opposite: When the team succeeds, they look into the mirror to pushy, holding out the precious rewards toward them; but when the team fails, they look out the window to blame others.

Remember that “Leaders don’t make excuses. They create results” - Robin Sharma
